GOOD TO KNOW Held on the Hancock Park lawn on the museum campus, not the Smidt plaza where the Friday jazz series plays — they are two different spots on the same grounds. Free, with picnicking welcome. Verified performers: a tribute to Willie Colón and Eddie Palmieri on August 22, Freddie Ravel on August 29, and Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loco on September 5. LACMA runs the series to Labor Day weekend.

Why it's worth your time

It is the Saturday counterpart to the jazz series and it books deeper than the usual civic-summer salsa night — the range runs from Indigenous music to current material out of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and LA itself. Going before Labor Day matters: unlike the Friday series, this one closes for the season.
